What Does the Orthodox Church Believe?

by Generous Orthodoxy on November 19, 2010

Hi, I'm a sixteen year old girl from England and was wondering what the orthodox church believe as I was considering looking into that church as I'm not yet baptised. I take Religious studies classes but we don't really look into what they believe in general. I'm so confused as to what denomination to join but I think it's best for me to look into all the options before making such a big commitment before God.

Pretty much the same as the Catholic Church except they don’t follow a pope.

The Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church are the most similar among any two Christian Church out there. Main difference is that the Orthodox Church does not believe that Pope Benedict XVI is from the succession of Peter.

Historically speaking, there was a schism which had separated the two. At one point in time, there were two Popes, but if you follow the line of succession then we would realize the Benedict XVI did follow the lineage Jesus to Peter and so forth.

It’s pretty much the same as Catholicism but they have a patriarch instead of a Pope… They both follow the treaty of nicea…soo…not much difference, no.

Basically the same as the Catholic Church the split goes back to the Great Schism of 1054 when some people wanted to move the Chair of Peter to Constantinople because the Constantine empire was the powerhouse of the time. When Peter went to Rome the Roman empire was in control. We know now that the city of Constantine no longer exists but Rome is still does. The Anglican Church has very similar beliefs they broke away from Rome when King Henry the 8th wasn’t granted an annulment.
