The dome made it possible to enclose a large interior space without the obstructions of intervening columns and pillars to support the roof. This permitted a large assembly of people within the space an unobstructed view of the altar.

Domes reflect sound.
Ever wonder how someone you never met knows all about your second cousins gall bladder surgery when you sat in the pew and only talked to your spouse about it?
Domes, my friend.
all you have to do is whisper upward, and those on the other side of the room will hear what you said.

domes in Churches are repositions of the heavens above and of God watching over the earth (painting of God in center of dome). It makes sense if you remember the earth center view of the Universe held by early man.decoration are just to make God’s house beautiful

the early christians were big on iconography… or holy icons translated now a day as priceless art. It appears it came thru the first icon painted by St Luke, Madonna and Child, when Mary was still alive. A supposedly a copy is in Poland [Black Madonna] and being venerated since day one. It’s the early christians crude way of exercising their faith and was passed on from generation to generation.
Visit the cave churches in Goreme, Capadoccia, Turkey and it is awesome how crude paintings remain in tact thru out the centuries.
