Why Do Protestants Entirely Neglect the Orthodox Christian Church?

by Generous Orthodoxy on May 14, 2011

We hear all about this distance among catholics and protestants, but at least catholics are recognized as existing. you'd be surprised by how many people have no idea that the orthodox church exists, and that is a very sad thing indeed to be unaware of nearly a third of our christian brothers and body.

because they are insecure about their own religion and know that god is going to send them to hell for their evil ways. they know what they are doing is wrong yet they choose not to repent and be saved by the lord their god.

I’m ashamed to say I didn’t until I talked to an orthodox man about 10 years ago.
Then I studied Christian history and you’ll turned up again :-)
There aren’t many Orthodox churchs where I live. There are hundreds of RC but not orthodox.

I have respect for the orthodox church. I”m not thrilled with the child sprinkle thingy but other than that you’ll are my christian bros and sista’s.

American Protestantism is a reflection of American society which in turn has a very limited worldview. As Eastern Orthodoxy is based mostly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, its pretty much off the radar screen of most American Protestants.

Inasmuch as the orthodox church represents a group that split from the Roman Catholic Church, they are, themselves, protestant. Why do you fail to recognize what protestants are?

I don’t know about what every other Protestant thinks, but to me, “Orthodox Christian” is like saying “A Roman Catholic on the other side of the Aegean Sea.”

The necessity for material objects is rather pronounced, and I don’t need any of those things. To me, it’s a carnal approach to something which is spiritual. Unnecessary, avoidable, dispensable, excessive, unordained and unwarranted. It’s a “need to see” when the promises of God are so apparent. They are unspiritual, putting on the act.

Ignorance, though to be fair there aren’t a lot of Orthodox in the English-speaking world. It annoys me, too. I’m sick of being told “only Catholics” use imagery, believe Mary was ever-virgin, honor saints, have seven sacraments, have “extra books” in their bible, etc.

I think it’s probably because the Orthodox Church is so culture-specific – you seldom find it outside of certain cultures, for example Greek or Russian. So it isn’t exactly well-known amongst the general populace.
Catholicism is more well-known because of how widespread it is, and not everyone who is Catholic is necessarily Irish, Mexican or Italian (or other Latino). The Catholic church is just more powerful than the Orthodox church, and you find it EVERYWHERE.
